Spine capabilities
Five capabilities that cross-cut every domain and every occupation.
AgenticU is built on two axes: seven knowledge domains (Mind, Information, Life, Society, Exchange, Matter, Culture) and five cross-cutting spine capabilities. The spines are not domain-specific — they are the meta-capabilities that determine how well you operate across every domain as AI changes the underlying rules of work.
Each spine is developed across five levels: Orient (recognise the terrain), Operate (maintain it through a project), Build (design it for others), Transform (lead it at scale), and Guide (operate at the frontier where the playbook runs out).
The spines compound. Sovereignty without Systems means you keep your judgment but cannot see what you are applying it to. Coordination without Sovereignty means you orchestrate others but have already deferred your own judgment to the machine. The full capability requires all five, developed together.
The five spines
- Sovereignty
Stay cognitively in charge when AI is doing the thinking.
The most common AI failure is not a model failure — it is the gradual hollowing of human judgment while the human remains technically in the loop. Sovereignty is what you build to prevent that.
- Systems
See the whole machine, not just your corner of it.
AI amplifies throughput. Systems thinking is what determines whether that throughput is pointed in the same direction. Without it, you generate more divergent work, faster.
- Coordination
Orchestrate humans and AI toward outcomes neither could reach alone.
The single biggest waste of AI capability in organisations today is not bad models — it is agents running in parallel producing work that is individually polished but jointly incoherent.
- Navigation
Make moves under genuine uncertainty without waiting for the map.
AI makes analysis cheap and action expensive. Navigation is the capability that remains scarce: the judgment to commit before the uncertainty resolves and adapt before the consequences compound.
- Translation
Bridge human judgment and AI capability across every context they meet.
Most AI system failures are translation failures at the boundary between domain knowledge and system design. Fluent-sounding AI summaries make this worse, not better — they look like translation without the accuracy.
Where to start
The fastest path into the spine curriculum is through your occupation. Find your role, see its specific AI exposure picture, and follow the path from there to the orient-level outcome for the spine most relevant to where your work sits.
