What it is
Navigation is the capacity to make good decisions when the information you need to make them with confidence does not yet exist and waiting for it is not a viable option. This is not a new problem — commanders, surgeons, and founders have always had to act under uncertainty. What the AI age adds is that the uncertainty is faster, the decision surface is larger, and the availability of confident-sounding AI output creates a new temptation to substitute the appearance of certainty for the real thing.
The core discipline in navigation is the OODA loop — Observe, Orient, Decide, Act — applied not as a one-time checklist but as a continuous practice. The observe step means gathering genuine signal rather than AI-generated summaries of what you would expect to see. The orient step means building your actual model of the situation, including what you believe and why, before the decision. The decide step means making a real commitment with real stakes rather than a reversible hedge. The act step means moving fast enough that the feedback arrives before the environment changes again.
Navigation is most tested in the places where no playbook exists. New business models, new regulatory environments, new technical capabilities, new social configurations — the places where AI is creating genuine novelty rather than just accelerating existing patterns. In those environments, the people who navigate well are not the ones with the best access to AI-generated analysis. They are the ones who can build a working model of an unprecedented situation fast enough to act before others have noticed the situation is unprecedented.
Why it matters now
AI makes it cheaper to produce analysis and more expensive to lack the judgment to act on it. The analysis itself is no longer the bottleneck — you can now get a sophisticated treatment of most questions in minutes. What the AI cannot give you is the judgment call about which model of the situation to act on when the models conflict, or the courage to commit to a direction before the uncertainty resolves, or the read on when the uncertainty is fundamental and you need to run an experiment rather than make a bet.
Navigation is the capability that separates people who are useful under genuine uncertainty from people who are useful when the situation is well-understood. AI abundance makes the well-understood situations cheaper to handle — which means the value premium shifts toward people who can function where AI cannot: in the places where the loop time is too short, the stakes are too specific, or the situation is too novel for a model trained on the past to have much useful to say.

You have run a project in genuinely uncertain territory — where the right approach was not knowable in advance — and can show your navigation decisions: what you observed, how you updated your model, when you committed, and when you pivoted. Your loop time — the cycle from new information to updated model to decision to action — is fast enough that you are learning from the environment rather than from retrospective analysis.

Design it for others — teams, systems, infrastructure.
You can design the decision infrastructure for a team operating under sustained uncertainty: how decisions escalate, who has authority to commit at each level, how disagreement on the model resolves, and what triggers a model update versus a decision reversal. The system has been run under real load and can be taught to new team members without losing its essential properties.

You have led an organisation through a transition where the destination was not clear at the start — a market shift, a technology adoption, a business model change — and can show the navigation decisions that defined the path.
