Operate

What this level is

Operate is the first level where theory meets sustained load. You are no longer describing how cognitive threats work — you are managing them in motion, under deadline pressure, across a project with real stakes. The transformation is from orientation to maintainable practice: you have built enough of the architecture to keep it standing while the work runs.

The epistemic shift at Operate is from knowing the map to having traversed the terrain. You discover which of your Orient-level beliefs held up and which dissolved under the weight of an actual project. This is where most people discover that automation bias is harder to resist than it sounds, that coordination failure happens faster than you expect, and that translation problems are structural, not conversational. Operate is the level where the curriculum stops being intellectual and starts being physical.

What you can do at this level

You can complete a project that uses AI heavily and demonstrate that your judgment remained the genuine decision authority at each critical juncture — not as a post-hoc claim but as a traceable record. You can coordinate a hybrid human-AI team through a full project: explicit authority assignments, defined escalation paths, a recoverable process when agents drift. You can navigate genuine uncertainty with compressed decision loops — observing real signal, updating your model, committing before certainty arrives. You can bridge the technical-nontechnical translation gap reliably throughout a project, not just in isolated moments. You can maintain a live systems model of your environment and use it to prevent local optimisation from degrading the whole.

Spine outcomes at this level

Every AgenticU level has five spine outcomes — one per spine capability. Each is assessed independently; the headline assessment type for this level is Project, but note that Coordination at Operate is assessed as an Ordeal (the outcome that requires the most sustained coordination under real load).
